fyi chris: earth scum
Following a series of acclaimed EP’s (via Church Rhythm Section, Toy Tonics, Banofee Pies and others), FYI Chris released their debut LP last friday through Black Acre. Earth Scum sees Chris Coupe and Chris Watson further stretch themselves creatively, exploring styles and timbres they perhaps haven’t had a chance to with previous releases. The album features a great cast of collaborators including Pinty, Simeon Jones (of The Colours That Rise), DJ Morris and Thick Richard - close friends of the two Chrises that give Earh Scum a communal and familial quality.
Earth Scum is arguably one of the most important releases in this beginning of 2021 for the electronic music aficionados. Despite having moments full of a ‘nightclub’ energy, it is equally suited to solitary personal listening as it is to loudly soundtracking cathartic and communal hedonism. All due to FYI Chris strong producing skills and the sonic maturity that they showcase here. Coupe and Watson delve into newly discovered esoteric sounds and motifs, retaining the DIY dancefloor sensibilities that the duo have become known for. FYI Chris deliver one of the best records of the year so far - Earth Scum is available on vinyl, for the collectors.
