javier santiago: phoenix
Like a phoenix we're reborn listening to the first few sounds coming out of Javier Santiago's new album. For years, the keyboardist has ping-ponged across the USA, searching for his sound in New York and California but he has always stayed true to his soulful roots in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Released by Ropeadope Records, Phoenix is an album full of snow-dusted funk and a refreshing approach to jazzified-fusion.
On rhodes and synthesizers, Javier Santiago is joined by saxophones, guitars, basses and drums, composing eight tracks that are incredibly harmonious and full of life. Life everywhere. Santiago’s rebirth welcomes the ears of the open minded listener. The modern sounds fused with classical learnings, forged from his own unique experience, are a mesmerizing addition to the jazz scene.
Released a month ago, Phoenix took its time to come to us. It was properly enjoyed, with attention for the sublime details that we faced throughout this experience. One of the best jazz records of the year.
