mmyykk: science
MMYYKK is a promising multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter and producer exhaling a deeply eclectic and futuristic sound. Situated at the intersections of soul music, jazz, electronica and r&b, Mychal Fisher mixes, shamelessly, neck-breaking rhythms and sonic alchemies. That's what we hear in Science, his latest EP, which addresses universal themes with good mood, fun and a lot of funk… Funk that is clearly inspired by contemporary works of guys like Thundercat or Flying Lotus, and older works, by giants like Herbie Hancock or Stevie Wonder.
With the city of Minneapolis as the scenery, epicenter since 2020 of movements that exude ancient struggles, pains, joys and, of course, culture, MMYYKK is able to approach deep themes with intention and lightness. He does it effortlessly, denoting a naturalness that is easily felt in his live performances (see video below). And despite being the complete leader of the operations in Science, it is possible to hear the musical richness of improvisation sections that his collaborators bring to the project. Every moment progresses in an unobvious way, asking us questions only to answer them later, in a more complete way. The result is unique. MMYYKK is a talented artist who operates on his own terms. Released by Rhythm Section International, Science is available on vinyl.
