àbáse x zeitgeist: body mind spirit
Francisco Espregueira
Listening to a record that blends the multi-instrumentalist Àbáse and drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist (also known for his project Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange and his work with the 30/70 Collective) is one of those pleasures that the vanguard jazz movement ends up providing. Body Mind Spirit, via Jazz & Milk, is a masterful collaboration. Sharing a deep musical understanding and respect, Àbáse and Ziggy move fluidly through future funk, deep electronica, house and techno while maintaining an undeniable organic, soulful and spiritual foundation, supported by the voice of Dumama - a South African-born, Berlin-based, artist, performer, sonic researcher and compelling storyteller, whose meditation-based vocals inspired the EP.
Surrounded by the eclectic and progressive musical culture of their new home Berlin, the two embark on a musical journey, merging their experimental background as live musicians with their love for modern electronic productions. Most of he studio sessions involved Àbáse improvising on keys, synths and percussion over Ziggy’s drum grooves and electronic beat sketches, followed by a careful and polished editing work by Ziggy’s genius, revamping those exact sessions. Available on vinyl, Body Mind Spirit is a record to explore deeply, beautifully capturing a highly sophisticated hybrid of hand-played elements and progressive, electronic grooves.
