cool affair: scamto (mzansi argot)
Francisco Espregueira
Exactly one year ago we wrote about Cool Affair. We had been listening to his surprise unannounced releases on Bandcamp for a while - always amazed by his distinguishable musical touch - and featured Afrikan Pride. To just have featured him once is a sin that we won’t be forgiven for. His prolific work that spans a decade is fed by limitless creativity and since Afrikan Pride, which was released by the same time last year, he dropped more than ten other EPs (!). Cool Affair’s last installment is entitled Scamto (Mzansi Argot) and plays with the idea of having Stimela (band) and Fela Kuti (band) in the same studio to create music.
Hailing from South Africa, known as The Prince of Broken Beats, Cool Affair is a man with a strong jazz background which, together with African rhythms, spirits and sonic choices, makes his work an essential stop at the underground African electronic movement. With the help of his brother, Soul Inferno, Scamto (Mzansi Argot) derives from life-long influences originated from Cool Affair’s dad work as a producer. They travel back to evoke 90’s Johannesburg, whilst speaking towards the future. The message on this project is strong and real. Scamto (Mzansi Argot) is available on Bandcamp, but more than inviting you to listen to this, we recommend this artist entire discography.
