dan shake: we have love ep
Francisco Espregueira
Dan Shake has been, over the past years, one of the most consistent producers in the house music scene hailing from the UK. Having released countless high-carat 12’’ EP’s, most of them through his own label Shake, he built an impressive discography that started with a golden introduction back in 2014 through Moodymann’s Mahogani Music. Shake’s new EP, We Have Love, is filled with crispy hats and funky b-lines powered by kicks that punch through the mix without ever being overbearing. Everything is well placed and everything moves at the same time.
Inspired by J Dilla’s productions, obvious in the hip hop interlude “Detention”, there’s a lot of the iconic Detroit producer in We Have Love. The bumping perc and soulful, slightly off-kilter samples are evident in other moments of the EP. The second track, “A Pirate’s Eye”, is a special diamond here included, thumping to a gliding vocal from another Detroit legend, and Dilla’s mentor: Amp Fiddler. Via Shake, We Have Love is available in vinyl.
