earth boys: automatic ep

Francisco Espregueira

Returning to Shall Not Fade after the success of their sellout LP Earth Tones last year, Brooklyn-based Earth Boys present the Automatic EP, to continue the Bristol label’s new Classic Cuts series. The duo composed by Julian Duron and Michael Sherburn, two connoisseurs of heady warm house music, showcase their usual deep house energy. Blending it with well crafted jazz instrumentation, Earth Boys create sophisticated and unique dance music.

Automatic EP kicks things off with the title-track, conveying infectious vocals that are guaranteed to circulate your head for hours, while a saxophone meanders over a laidback house beat. “Okokok”, which nods to Middle Eastern disco, blends sax solos pair with a throbbing acid bassline. This acidic edge is brought to the forefront in the hard hitting business of “Revolution 420”, a rave ready number infused with laser cut synths and dreamy pads. Flipping the record, the hazey natural breaks but disco influenced bassline make “Hush” both muted and danceable. Earth Boys bring master house producer JT Donaldson on board for the closing track, a sound soaked with funk ‘n’ soul influence in its chunky slap bass and crooning female vocals. Available on vinyl, Automatic is a stylish EP that is equally cool and romantic. It’s also another quality project from Earth Boys.
