2019 introduced us to Ebi Soda, an emerging and exciting contemporary jazz act from Brighton. Following the acclaimed Bedroom Tapes EP, comes Ugh, a collection of tunes from the collective’s first ventures into professional recording. Recorded over a year from numerous different sessions, the project brings an air of spontaneity to it, with its genre-switching, experimental nature leading the band to consider it more of a mixtape than an album.
The ten-track project flows with ease as we proceed through Ebi Soda’s jams. The DIY-centric identity is maintained from previous projects, with the band exploring its raw energy. Fluid, yet complex. That’s how it feels. Ugh is the confirmation of Ebi Soda as one of the leading collectives in the UK jazz movement. It is also the mixtape we needed for tonight. Available on vinyl.
