fabiano do nascimento & sam gendel: the room
Francisco Espregueira
In a departure from his typical avant-garde explorations, saxophonist Sam Gendel collaborates with Brazilian guitarist Fabiano do Nascimento in their latest project, The Room, released under Real World Records. Known for his innovative manipulation of the saxophone, Gendel, in this acoustic venture, joins forces with Nascimento's seven-string guitar, resulting in a mesmerizing album that pays homage to the rich traditions of Brazilian and Latin jazz.
The Room comprises ten tracks where Gendel's soprano saxophone, producing a flute-like sound, weaves intricately with Nascimento's muscular finger-picking harmonics. The album, recorded over two days in a basement studio in Pacific Palisades, captures the intersection of Nascimento's atmospheric guitar and Gendel's distinctive saxophone harmonics. Their shared appreciation for Brazilian influences, environmentalism, and a mutual love for artists like Hermeto Pascoal and the classic "Getz/Gilberto" album played a pivotal role in shaping the unique soundscape this project. Available on vinyl.
