felipe gordon & bob the egoist: freedom ep
Francisco Espregueira
Since 2017 that Felipe Gordon has been a regular contributor to the unstoppable series of eclectic releases by Toy Tonics. Back then Gordon was an up and coming producer and five years later he established himslef as one of the most sought jazz-influenced deep house producers, having recently released on labels like Heist, Groovin, Shall Not Fade, Razor N Tape, among others.- Following Teusaquillo (2017) and Wait On Me (2020), he presents his third Toy Tonics EP, taking his next big step in his artistic development. Freedom EP is the result of months working thorugh a new and organic path - a different way of vocal house. He started working with a talented young Colombian singer called Bob The Egoist (a.k.a. Daniel Pardo). Bob is a young Berklee degree student with a deep and emotional voice, an amazing knowledge about the classic soul and RnB and a clever and enthusiastic way of writing chord progressions - you will hear his name more often than you can imagine in the next coming months.
This new record sees Felipe Gordon driving us towards a more organic feel, and is definitely a vocal house opus. With a lot of classic 1990's house feel, but still not sounding retro at all, Freedom EP has a slight futuristic sound. Besides the great vocal ideas the tracks are based on amazing chord progressions that remind the jazz-funk music from the early 1970's. Rhodes and clavinets, wah wahs and a nasty, soulful atmosphere. Felipe did some heavenly synth work, creating music with a deep yet funky character - always punchy and analog - and Bob The Egoist’s contribution is vital in the development of new paths for the Colombian producer - maitaining a style that is undoubtely his but exploring new grounds. Freedom EP drops in September on vinyl, but is already available for a listen via Toy Tonics’ bandcamp.
