jitwam: honeycomb
Francisco Espregueira
HONEYCOMB is Jitwam’s second album - following his debut, ज़ितम सिहँ, from 2017 - and one of the defining releases of this year, on the underground rotations. Hitting the sweet spot between Jitwam’s work in dance music and efforts as a bandleader, connecting people in-studio and on-stage, the record encapsulates his incredible journey leading him to this project. India, Australia, monasteries in Thailand, orphanages in South Africa, and finally Brooklyn, NYC, where he is currently based.
Highlighting soulful perspectives within the world of psychedelic indie rock, the hip hop realm, and underground house music, Jitwam’s diverse musical identities come alive in his 12-track album of broken blues, heartfelt vocals, and smooth assorted instrumentation. After some well received EP’s on his own imprint, The Jazz Diaries, HONEYCOMB takes on life’s mundane moments, turning them into inspired tales of life, love, sadness, and periods of ecstatic release. The doors to wider audiences are blast-opened. Jitwam fuses musical identities and stitches together ideas creating some of the warmest music you’ll hear all year.
HONEYCOMB was recorded in London, where Natureboy Flako lent a special touch to a special record. Released earlier this month, through Copenhagen-based label Tartelet Records, the album is introduced by a short-film of the album’s first track “busstop”. Directed by Filipe Zapelini, in the exhilarating city of Mumbai, this is way more than just a music-video.
