jitwam: third
Francisco Espregueira
Still relatively unknown to the big public, Jitwam is probably one of the most talented and multi-faceted artists in the contemporary music scene. His style is impossible to be defined and contained in boxes. That is evident through a varied and juicy discography that includes two maginficent albums, ज़ितम सिहँ (2017) & Honeycomb (2019), and two handfuls of ecstatic EP’s, singles and collaborations. Dropping tomorrow, via Roya, he presents Third - the new album sees him expanding upon his beat-making abilities and production, fusing live music with samples and edits while elevating his craft to new heights. The record was years in the making and is partly indebted and inspired to the time Jitwam lived in London, but more so by his adventures in NYC.
Much like the spirit you may ecounter in the streets of the big apple, Third skips across genres nimbly with a drunken bravado collecting along the way influences from Latin music, soul, punk, and a lot of disco. It melds all these genres into a singular rich sound showcasing, yet again, how Jitwam has carved out a path unto himself. Across ten tracks, he creates infectious songs which are gratifyingly hard to categorise with a mixture of modulated vocals and traditional instrumentation amalgamated with the headiness of soulful house and jazz. Available on vinyl, Third is another great record from one of the genious of our generation.
