jk group: the young ones
Francisco Espregueira
Via La Sape, the end of this week will bring us another talented project hailing from Melbourne, further maintaining the city’s status as one of the main hubs of musical creation on earth. The JK Group, led by saxophonist Josh Kelly - best known for his work with future soul-jazz collective 30/70 -, are a powerhouse nu-jazz band, creating organic music and blending raw, live jazz with electronic/dance productions - much like the works of fellow colleagues like Horatio Luna, On-Ly or Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange. The Young Ones LP, their debut, is a another exciting chapter of the Melbourne Sound we are currently living, appreciating.
First mentioned here as part of the fantastic downundaground compilation, JK Group’s first album is highly-awaited. With a couple of singles being unveiled in the past few weeks, we are now close to fully understand what could be one of the best debuts of 2020. The Young Ones respectfully nods to classic jazz traditions, whilst carving a path that unashamedly looks towards the future, embracing modern influences and production techniques. A talented team of musicians delivers it in style, alongside special contributions. Vinyls are available for pre-purchase, courtesy of La Sape. This is the sound of Melbourne.
