kaidi tatham: serious times
Francisco Espregueira
Kaidi Tatham is one of the most revered multi-instrumentalists in the game. His contributions as a musician, composer & producer have included work with Bugz In The Attic, Amy Winehouse, Slum Village, Mulatu Astatke, Moonchild, Darkhouse Family, Eric Lau, Children of Zeus, Amp Fiddler and loads more over the years. Tatham’s sound has always moved forward, mainly in the last two decades, as he traveled from genre-to-genre, mixing them, creating new ones. Despite that, there’s always something that immediately identifies him as the author. An unmistakable sound. His latest EP comes out tomorrow.
Serious Times is another 4-track set, encompassing broken beat, jazz, boogie and hip hop. Furthermore, we can hear latin-tinged pianos, nasty-synth sounds and instrumental boom bap influences - another mere taster of this man's endless talents and unique vibes. Kaidi Tatham might be one of the most important musicians of the first decades of the XXI century, and if you don’t know him, maybe is because something’s wrong in the industry: Serious Times. Available on vinyl, through First Word Records.
