marquis hill: love tape
Francisco Espregueira
Blowing his flugelhorn all the way from Chicago, Marquis Hill is an award-winning trumpeter, composer, and bandleader - a highly skilled jazz musician with a bent toward soulful post-bop. Assembling a collection of interviews women sharing their perspectives on love and self-love, he builds around the theme to produce the wonderful Love Tape, his eighth studio album.
Like many of his brilliant contemporaries, Marquis Hill never knew a world without hip hop, house music, or modern R&B. All of those genres mix freely in all his projects, including Love Tape. Harmoniously connecting to his band, Hill’s horn lines touch us in a soft and melodic way. This album is a sublime translation of love in all its aspects — nine tracks reflecting the talent of the band and their immense respect for details and moments.
Marquis Hill - Flugelhorn; Mike King - Piano, Keyboards, Fender Rhodes; Junius Paul - Electric Bass; Marcus Gilmore - Drums; with Special Guests Christie Dashiell - Vocals; Josh Johnson - Alto Sax
