max graef: natural element

Francisco Espregueira

Max Graef’s highly anticipated return to Tartelet Records is titled Natural Element and is a genre-bending journey that melds bass-heavy daydreams with dancefloor-ready rhythms. Scheduled to drop next friday, this album marks a significant evolution in Graef's sound, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of his acclaimed debut, Rivers of the Red Planet. Where his previous work explored a diverse array of musical styles, Natural Element finds Graef embracing a more cohesive yet experimental approach, weaving together dreamy chords, psychedelic undertones, and funk-infused grooves.

The tracks on Natural Element showcase Graef's meticulous production style and his ability to blend organic and electronic elements seamlessly. From the chill-out vibes of "Sports (Is Good For You)" to the synth-driven "Around The Globe," the album exudes a shimmering psychedelia that is both refreshing and nostalgic. The tropical breakbeat of "We are the World (Test Drive)" and the cascading textures of "Sound Bytes" and "Zitar" highlight Graef's knack for creating immersive soundscapes. Reflecting on the process, Graef's return to intensive MIDI work and his balance of analog and digital techniques have resulted in a rich, textured album that feels both innovative and grounded, capturing the essence of his ever-evolving musical universe. This is one for the present and for the future, from one of the most interesting artists of his generation. Available on vinyl.

There is nothing worse than stagnation and conformism. I still am the same person, my ideals and values have not changed much, but my influences and approaches have.
— Max Graef
