minus & mrdolly: giant stops
Francisco Espregueira
Building on what is becoming a sublime and complete discography, Porto-based producer Minus & MRDolly follows up on Man With A Plan (2018) and Broken Hearts Make Broken Beats (2021) with another high-karat-gold blend of jazz, hip hop and electronic. Named in direct reference to arguably one of the greatest albums ever created, "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane, Giant Stops pays homage to the rich legacy of jazz while pushing the boundaries of the genre with a contemporary twist - nostalgic, modern, emotional.
Composed by 10 tracks, Giant Stops represents a new chapter in Minus & MRDolly evolution as a musician. The creative process of the album featured a choice for the use of dynamic instrumentals backed by a live band, with Minus & MRDolly's signature storytelling shining through. The textures and closeness of the sound are indeed on point, encouraging us to dig deeper into the rich history jazz, hip hop and black music. Guest musicians such as Meta_ or Luca Argel add an important layer of storytelling and vocal melodies, which end up driving emotions high. Giant Stops is, more than anything else, organic and natural. Characteristics that extend to the use of samples, masterfully blended into the beautiful soundscape that the producer presents. Available on vinyl - in this case, a wax type of gold curated by Jazzego Records..
