moonee: primal groove
Francisco Espregueira
Following up on his 2022 Wabi Sabi EP (via Groovence), Moonee is back with another classy musical project, releasing a five-track EP titled Primal Groove on the reputable SlothBoogie. The EP is a journey through soulful and deep house music, working well both on the dancefloor and on dim-lighted peaceful moments. It is also a showcase of Moonee’s ability to blend influences and create a cohesive and captivating listening experience. Each track on the record has its own unique identity, but all are tied together by Moonee’s musicality.
Primal Groove kicks off with “Apples”, a groovy track that incorporates elements of Motor city soul with filtered bass and dusty horn samples. The track is tied together with spaced-out guitar licks and an otherworldly vocal that brings it all to a close. “Shishingo” and “Dinner At Michelle’s” follow, both tracks showcasing Moonee’s ability to mix bouncy drums, subtle organ flourishes, and a skipping bassline with disco influences. The B side introduces us to the title track “Primal Groove” which takes us deep into a nostalgic trip with its string swells and filtered bass. The track is a slow burn that builds up tension towards a heads-down groove section. The final track, “Boka”, is a sumptuous and glistening tune that is perfect for winding down and drifting off into a peaceful sanctuary. Available on vinyl via SlothBoogie, Moonee’s Primal Groove is a must-listen for anyone who loves soulful and deep house music.
