myele manzanza: crisis & opportunity, vol. 4 - meditations

Francisco Espregueira

Drummer and composer Myele Manzanza returns with the fourth volume of his Crisis & Opportunity record series, titled Meditations, under the DeepMatter label. Departing from the electronic influences explored in the previous volumes, Crisis & Opportunity, Vol. 4 - Meditations marks a deliberate return to Myele's jazz roots, featuring an acoustic lineup of exceptional musicians. Collaborating with pianist Matthew Sheens and double bassist Matt Penman, the trio crafts an introspective and contemplative sonic landscape across seven tracks.

Meditations unfolds as a deeply personal and solitary album, intentionally stepping away from the realms of entertainment and dance. Myele Manzanza expresses a rebellion against the pervasive influence of modern technology on our lives, delivering a purely acoustic experience that relies on the raw interplay between three accomplished musicians. The trio's intuitive connection, reflected in the quality of sound, emphasizes each artist's mastery of their instrument and their ability to make spontaneous decisions, creating a unique space where artistry, technique, and mental acuity converge. In a world tethered to the digital realm, Crisis & Opportunity, Vol. 4 - Meditations stands as a testament to the enduring power of acoustic music to provoke introspection and evoke profound emotions. Available on vinyl.

With the interference of modern technology on our lives and how so much of our attention is tethered to the digital world, perhaps this album is a small rebellion against that. At least in the sense that it’s a purely acoustic album. It relies on the interplay of three musicians, listening to each other and making spontaneous decisions in order to execute the music.
