mystic jungle: deviant disco
Francisco Espregueira
Periodica Records is an essential label on the Neapolitan electronic & funk scene - a future-facing scene that’s inspired by the history, spirit and geography of Napoli with many interconnected but unique sounds. One of the names that has contributed the most to the boogie charm of Periodica is Mystic Jungle, returning with a new unmissable record entitled Deviant Disco. This new 12” of sun-soaked groovers marks the culmination of several years of writing, vibing, and influence mining with five compositions that represent the producer’s most varied and expansive works yet.
The label is powered by the West Hill Studio’s production crew, which joins in to contribute in the realization of Mystic Jungle’s vision. We’re talking about narcotizing layers of pop vocal mesmerism, and additional touches of guitar, bass, percussion, and synth. Strains of Italo-disco, balearic boogie, and freaky funk are interspersed amidst passages of Nigerian highlife, soft focus AOR, kinetic Hi-NRG, and exotic lover’s rock, resulting in a personalized voyage through a paradise of sound. This represents very well the underground musical history of Napoli, situated in a special place between different cultures. Celebrating a desire to dance through the night, Deviant Disco was made make your feet stomp. Available on vinyl, courtesy of the one and only Periodica Records.
