raffaele attanasio: nuovo futuro
Francisco Espregueira
Axis Records keeps ‘opening up the books’ with another prime release that we have to share with our audience. The Italian Raffaele Attanasio is a multifaceted artist that has delivered an eclectic sound over the years, from devious techno to melodious rhythmic beats. In the fantastic Nuovo Futuro he presents a jazz-tinged, angular, progressive and championing album by coalescing influential factors: a musician father, a multifarious palate in music, and prowess as a multi-instrumentalist. Attanasio creates a ‘new future’, by travelling to the past and digging into the zeitgeist of Naples post-second world war sound. Coming from his time-travelling trip, he uses the elements found and combines them with his modern flair.
Nuovo Futuro encapsulates the influence of American blues and jazz felt in Attanasio’s hometown, celebrating the lore of Neapolitan musicians. The history of the album comes to life, inspired in ‘70s spaghetti films and rich Italian exuberance. On nine tracks, which feature alternate versions of some original compositions, we embark on a trip through the streets where he grew up, his wandering mind, meandering into the harmonious Mediterranean. Melodies are soft, smooth, progressive and fulminating the constraints of contemporary music - keeping the later trademark sound that Axis Records is exploring in their releases. Available on vinyl, Nuovo Futuro is high-karat gold.
