robert frederik: bokeh ep
Francisco Espregueira
Up and coming producer Robert Frederik debuts on the reputable Morris Audio imprint with a distinctive take on deep house music. bokeh ep is a surprising project that blends modern minimalistic touches with elements of early Warp’s “Bleeps & Clonks”. The result is an atmospheric, emotional and touching 4-tracker.
Based in Newport/Wales, Robert Frederik presents a project that ‘sounds beyond the sound’. It has a visual aspect to it, that although not easy to describe through words, is immediately understood in the title-track that kicks off the EP. “Trapeze” is a thumping moment of class, with playful vocal samples threatening textures of scat jazz, while “Quink” goes deeper into dreamlike textures. Closing bokeh ep, “Misshape” grabs influences from North-American deep house elements, wrapped in a production that progresses with smoothness. Our favorite of the four. Available on Bandcamp, this is one to keep under close watch.
