simon jefferis: vibrations
Francisco Espregueira
Simon Jefferis was first introduced here in 2016. At that time, under the alias Simon J, the South London polymath was creating a series of well polished single releases that instantly grabbed the attention of a huge number of listeners, steadily circulating through the city’s hip hop/neo soul undercurrents. After the success of his SJ’s Pockets, Vol. 1 in 2017, it is a pleasure to get back to Jefferis’ new project, his debut LP named Vibrations that dropped via DeepMatter last week - showcasing his evolution as an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist and adaptive producer.
Vibrations is a groovy, jazzy, afro-influenced affair. It is a collaborative effort too, featuring fantastic guest appearances: Natty Reeves, Rosie Lowe, Dylan Jones, Abhi The Nomad, Shunaji, just to name a few. With ease, Jefferis demonstrates the breadth of his musical capabilities, turning his hand to guitar, keys, drums and bass to create a marking album for 2020. Head nod inducing beats, jazz-infused keys and interweaving textures make this a stand out record amongst the already sonically rich London jazz scene. Vibrations is out on digital and 12” vinyl via DeepMatter.
