As we know, Melbourne is a kind of Mecca for the lovers of sonic experiences that blend jazz, soul and electronic music. On bass, Henry Hick (a.k.a. Horatio Luna), is one of the most important musicians of that vibrant musical scene - which doesn’t stop in providing brand new and exciting acts. Luna became known as a founding-member of the 30/70 Collective, which gave him the possibility of exploring a myriad of inspirations on his own, delivering a very diverse output. Following the fantastic Yes Doctor and Boom Boom LP’s, both released last year, Luna now presents himself as the leader of The Psychedelic Freaks and releases a true sound odyssey that takes to a different galaxy.
Released by La Sape, Passing Through The Doorways Of Your Mind fuses, organically, textures of psychedelic jazz with afrobeat, breathing in inspirations from Miles Davis’ electric era. But it goes beyond Miles… exploring timeless waves left by Fela Kuti, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Hendrix and many other important figures from that era. Passing Through The Doorways Of Your Mind is a courageous album. Not only due to its experimental trademark, but also because its music is unpredictable at every moment. It can, sometimes, sound strange or hard to chew. But that just ends being bits of a brilliant decoy that Luna and his bandmates play on us. “I’m interested in exploring all aspects of Jazzy House (Jazz House) and one of the most prominent influence to this music is Jazz Fusion. This record was about going deep into the 70s fusion scene to understand a bit more about this music, where it comes from and hopefully find some new ideas. It’s all Jazzy House to me. This record also gave me the opportunity to flesh out my guitar playing, singing and jamming on synths.”
