v.a.: new tangents in kampala, london and nairobi
Francisco Espregueira
The collaborative project of Extra Soul Perception releases its second LP, featuring an outstanding array of independent musicians, mainly based in Uganda, Kenya and the United Kingdom. Dropping soon, New Tangents in Kampala, London and Nairobi started taking shape in 2019 at a writing camp in Nairobi. The album was completed remotely over course of the worldwide lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Musically diverse, it connect innovators in their own fields, with each artist bringing unique knowledge and musical culture to the project.
First introduced through an EP released in 2020, New Tangents in Kampala, London and Nairobi is a twelve-track compilation that comprises collaborations between artists like Faizal Mostrixx (UG), Hibotep (UG), K15 (UK), Karun (KE), Labdi (KE), Lex Amor (UK), Lynda Dawn (UK), Maxwell Owen (UK), Itsmdnyt (UG), XL Middleton (US), Xenia Menasseh (KE), Sola and Azu Tiwaline (TUN). While some of them have been covered extensively in this platform, we have the chance of getting introduced to new names and ways of making unusual-sounding music. The kind that opens our soul.
Collectively, this group represent a broad spectrum of sound, each with a unique understanding of the power of soul music in its many forms. The album reflects this via an inspiring mixture of beautiful soul, glitchy beats, spoken word and bumping instrumentals. Dropping in vinyl on March 25th, Extra Soul Perception’s project continues to grow and continues to connect.
Extra Soul Perception is a collaboration and community music platform that started life between the UK, Kenya and Uganda but is now continuing to grow and connect independent musicians worldwide.
