vum vum: muzangola
Francisco Espregueira
Raw. Emotional. Heavy. Short. Back in 1969, hailing from Angola, Vum Vum was creating a special EP of just four tracks that would set him up to be considered today the father figure of the Angolan rock scene. Muzangola is a historic piece, a real garage-style nugget 7-inch record, now reissued by the invaluable work of Lisbon-based Groovie Records (originally published by Valentim de Carvalho).
Despite its release in Portugal, when Angola was colony ready to be free, the record never saw wide distribution in its main 'metropolis’. Most copies traveled with the Portuguese diaspora after the colonial war, and the record became a cult holy grail highly sought by record collectors in Europe - becoming the entry point into the Angolan musician for hip hop diggers. After more than 50 years, and a fair amount of tributes paid to the overwhelming uniqueness of Muzangola, Vum Vum’s first EP is available in vinyl. Another incredible and very welcomed reissue by Groovie Records.
