divorce from new york: brick lane
Francisco Espregueira
Spanish producer Alvaro Granda, known as Divorce From New York, unveils his latest album Brick Lane, on Madrid's Tokonoma Records. This album marks a fresh chapter for Granda, following his acclaimed releases This Ain't Jazz No More (Forbidden Colours, 2021) and Sausalito (High Praise, 2022). Brick Lane showcases Granda's signature blend of broken beat, uplifting melodies, and syncopated rhythms. Drawing inspiration from future jazz and classic Chicago house, the album pulsates with an organic energy.
Divorce From New York teams up with a varied cast of collaborators, including Quiet Dawn, Fernando Damon, Sara Zozaya, and Arturo Martin. Grainy field recordings weave through the nine tracks, leaning towards capturing the essence of London's vibrant underground music scene. Making use of his magnific instincts for groove and touch, Granda touches not only on different genres and paces, but also on different textures all together. Much like walking in the British capital, we feel the diversity of his influences coming alive as we go through the new album. From the sub-heavy grooves of "Copeland Park" to the smoky ambience of "The Pickle Factory," "Brick Lane" cements Divorce From New York's status as a leading light in European soulful production. Dropping today on Tokonoma Records, this is one of our favorite releases of the year so far. Available on vinyl.
