eumir deodato: os catedráticos 73
Francisco Espregueira
The legendary work of Eumir Deodato is, once again, reissued with the stamp of Far Out Recordings label. Following Ataque - originally from 1965 and reissued by the same label in late 2018 -, Os Catedráticos 73 album travels thirty-six years in time to be remastered and repressed in vinyl. This official Far Out release, a 1973-2019 connection, has the blessing of Deodato himself and represents a time when the brazilian keyboardist and composer was at the height of his productivity.
Recorded between Rio de Janeiro and New York, Os Catedráticos 73 features a magnificent brazilian rhythm section including Azymuth drummer Ivan ‘Mamão’ Conti, percussion master Orlandivo, and Sergio Barroso on bass, while the horn section features some of the big apple’s top players. Mixing Deodato’s signature groove and a latin jazz spirit, the album combines the sensibility of post-bossa nova sounds with north american soul & funk, capturing the character of ‘70s New York. Available on vinyl, Os Catedráticos 73 is an imperative piece of collection.
