jimpster: soul spectral ep
Francisco Espregueira
2021 is a milestone for the revered Freerange Records and its main man Jimpster. Founded in 1996, this is the year the label completes 25 years of existence. Together, Tom Roberts and Jamie Odell (a.k.a. Jimpster) have released countless high-karat music (Freerange’s discography is outstanding), fueled by their passion for discovering, making and releasing what they love. Ahead of the release of his fifth LP, a four vinyl Jimpster anthology and remix EP, we dive head first into the deepness of his new Soul Spectral EP.
Soul Spectral is a cinematic 4-track EP for the wee hours. It has a widescreen feeling to it, provoking the space for the intellect to come alive. The title track’s rhodes chords hang suspended in the air while Greg Paulus’ lilting trumpet spins us out into the stratosphere and Laroye’s live percussion adds an organic depth to the track. “Sanguine” continues the theme of sublime, heartfelt music for the body and soul. On the flip, ”Think Of You Always” is a more uptempo house jam but one that stays true to the ethereal mood of the release. The EP ends with a dub version of “Soul Spectral”, with Jimpster stripping away the harmonic elements to let Greg’s beautiful shiny trumpet take centre stage. Vinyls on this one might’ve run out by now. Coming from Jimpster it’s always worth of checking, if you’re a collector.
