prequel: love (or i heard you like heartbreak)
Francisco Espregueira
Jamie Lorusso-Zyskind, also known as Prequel, has been releasing his works very selectively. Since 2016 he has dropped landmark EP’s on Rhythm Section, Distant Hawaii and Local Talk. It’s been a while since we heard new music from him, as he was probably preparing a more complex and detailed project. That project is Love (Or I Heard You Like Heartbreak), marking his return to Rhythm Section. This full album is a very unique 12-track journey through the highs and lows of love and loss, incorporating soul, jazz, hip hop & Brazilian influences – all drenched in a deep longing which traces its roots back to the masters of deep, melancholic house music.
Prequel’s sonic approaches have always suggested that he'd someday deliver a brilliant debut album like Love (Or I Heard You Like Heartbreak). It is a work of someone that has eclecticism, passion and knowledge on his craft. The Melbourne-based producer explores meanings in fully formed chunks of jazzy, soul-flecked deep house, jazz-dance, broken beat, ambient, low-slung disco-funk and hazy, blink-and-you-miss-them instrumental interludes. There’s plenty of highlights in this record: in the peak-time disco-jazz of “I Tried To Tell Him“; in the jazz-house epic “And That's The Story of Their Love“; in the Latin-bruk haziness of “Love Is”. Available in vinyl, Love (Or I Heard You Like Heartbreak) is Prequel’s most important work to date.
