kofi the unknown: the late bloomer ep
Francisco Espregueira
Delivering an emotional journey through sophisticated dance music, Kofi The Unknown presents his debut EP on Amsterdam-based Wicked Wax label. He subverts ideas of immediacy, showcasing a work that he was aiming for some years, taking time for spiritual introspection, and studying rhythms and sound production. The Late Bloomer EP is the perfect starting point of an artist that we came across a couple of times (in compilations such as this one) and that has been conquering us.
Highly influential to Kofi’s sound and this EP is London’s broken beat scene. Syncopated drums, soulful chords and heavy bass lines work in tandem to emphasize the danceability the genre is known for. This ode for the underground sounds of the UK is blended with a some Rotterdam flavours, with Kofi adding his hip hop and funk lineage into the mix. Throughout four tracks, The Late Bloomer is an energetic yet mindful listening experience. Straight from Kofi’ heart, this record is available on vinyl. Don’t sleep.
