léon phal: stress killer

Francisco Espregueira

Saxophonist Léon Phal takes center stage with his latest full-length album, Stress Killer, marking his debut release on Heavenly Sweetness. Following his 2021 album Dust to Stars on Kyudo Records, Phal’s sophomore project delves even deeper into the crossroads of nightclub and jazz club culture. A prominent figure in the thriving French new jazz scene, Léon Phal's influence extends far beyond European borders, and he charts his unique course with the unwavering support of his quintet: Arthur Alard (drums), Rémi Bouyssière (double bass), Gauthier Toux (keyboards), and Zacharie Ksyk (trumpet).

In a striking departure from convention, Stress Killer sets itself apart by not incorporating drum machines or samplers in its creation, relying solely on traditional jazz instrumentation despite its proximity to nightclub sounds. Léon Phal's saxophone commands the spotlight throughout the album, skillfully fusing jazz elements with intricate electronic nuances, creating musical notes and ideas that beckon the dancefloor's fervor and the clubgoers' irresistible urge to move. Collaborations with K.O.G and Lorine Chia on "Idylla" and "Something Inside" respectively add further dimensions to the album, showcasing the diversity of influences within Phal's musical universe. As "Stress Killer" unfolds, it offers a dynamic listening experience, from the uplifting and playful title track to the contemplative "Balanced Action," and finally, an interpretation of John Coltrane's "Naima" that pays homage to the saxophone masters who paved the way. The album culminates with "Clarity," a nostalgic yet hopeful piece that leaves listeners with a sense of fulfillment.

Stress Killer is a magnetic record that effortlessly navigates the spectrum of energies found on dark nightclub dance floors and intimate basement jazz clubs. While its sound at times resembles that of machines, it unfailingly retains its human touch. Available on vinyl, courtesy of Heavenly Sweetness.
