luiz carlos vinhas: o som psicodélico de l. c. v.
Francisco Espregueira
Time to get back to our long and amazing series of reissues, this time around provided by the absolutely invaluable work of Lisbon-based Mad About Records. In 1968 the carioca piano player Luiz Carlos Vinhas released a true milestone in Brazilian music, with very rare copies of its original edition being available today. O Som Psicodélico de L. C. V. is a fantastic journey back in time to a bold mix of jazz with sounds that came from the bossa nova, tropicália and psychedelic rock movements.
Prior to this masterpiece, Vinhas was already one of the great names of bossa nova. He worked as a pianist at Beco das Garrafas, as well as appearing on Elis Regina's albums, Quarteto em Cy, Jorge Ben Jor, Maria Bethânia, among others. He also formed the first instrumental group of bossa nova, Bossa Três. Landing in 1968, O Som Psicodélico de L. C. V. was a mind-blowing piece for its time, standing the test of more than five decades, as a remarkably fresh exploration and expansion of the bossa nova and tropicália musical envelope. Available on vinyl.
