matters unknown: silhouettes: a dream sphere journal
Francisco Espregueira
Jonathan Enser, known for his work with the amazing Nubiyan Twist collective, delves into profound personal and sociopolitical themes with his solo project, Matters Unknown, and the release of Silhouettes: A Dream Sphere Journal. This EP, released on his own label, is more than just a collection of tracks; it's a poignant exploration of disability, decolonial thought, and the power of artistic expression. Crafted during a period of intense personal challenge, including chronic pain and the prospect of amputation, Silhouettes transcends individual experience to become a broader narrative about resilience and the pursuit of liberation. Drawing on a rich tapestry of influences—from African diasporic traditions and improvisation to rap, classical arrangements, and experimental sounds—Enser challenges societal limitations on both personal and collective freedom.
As a resident at East London's Total Refreshment Centre, Enser conceived Silhouettes as both a cathartic process and a manifesto for reimagining the world through a decolonial lens. Featuring collaborations with talents from Nerija, Nala Sinephro, and Nubya Garcia's bands, alongside guest appearances from Onipa, Flavio Correa, and NEONE the Wonderer, the EP weaves together a rich, multi-layered sonic tapestry. Silhouettes: A Dream Sphere Journal stands also as both a deeply personal spiritual journal and a call to collective action, urging listeners to actively participate in shaping a more liberated and imaginative future through creativity, solidarity, and the shared pursuit of freedom. All through beautiful compositions that expressive so many influences. Available on vinyl.
