ranil: ranil y su conjunto tropical
Francisco Espregueira
Emerging back in the 1970’s, in the isolation of Iquitos, Peru, a new Amazonian style of cumbia echoed through impenetrable forests. Raúl Llerena Vásquez - Ranil -, one of the style’s greatest musicians, traveled in the Amazonian jungle studying, playing, teaching the unstoppable rhythms of Colombian and Brazilian dance music, and the psychedelic electricity of guitar-driven rock-and-roll.
Raúl’s invaluable output has remained one of the best kept secrets among collectors of cumbia and psychedelic Latin sounds. Analog Africa, an incredible label based in Germany dedicated to release lost sounds from all over, unveils this secret releasing a fully-licensed compilation of 14 tracks – many of which have never seen wide release outside the Amazonian region – by a singular artist at the very height of his considerable powers. Available on vinyl Ranil y Su Conjunto Tropical is a golden piece of history to appreciate and never forget.
A selection of tunes that not made into the album are being given away to comfort those at home. Each day, one track. Stay Safe & Sound Ranil Selection is free for everyone.
