retromigration: kush calls ep
Francisco Espregueira
We welcome back once again the German-born, Amsterdam-based producer Retromigration. Following a string of killer releases on labels like Ltd, W/Lbl, GLBDOM, Handy Record or WOLF Music, he keeps carving out a distinct path for himself with his tantalizing, raw house sound, influenced by jazz, broken beat and hip hop - combining elements of classic production techniques to sculpt his warm, authentic sound. Dropping tomorrow via Oath, Kush Calls EP is his latest release, comprised by a marvelous selection of samples that give a special touch over expertly played basslines and trademark rhythmic sections.
Pointing to his Nigerian and Ghanaian roots, Retromigration shines a distinct musicality and a blissfully laid-back approach to his sound. That is evident in Kush Calls EP, where the producer is once again able to provide a sonic approach that crosses our mind as street-deep-house. That fusion, clearly inspired in hip hop and jazz, stems from an upbringing of studying jazz bass and is present throughout this stunning release. Courtesy of Instabul-based Oath, the record is available on vinyl and comes a week after Retromigration’s second EP through WOLF Music. WOLFEP064 is also available on vinyl, for the collectors.
