sunny side up: sunny side up
Francisco Espregueira
Sunny Side Up takes a snapshot of the eclectic Melbourne musical movement - ready to boil over. Comprised of nine tracks, Brownswood Recordings joins a diverse lineup, compiling a powerful document of the city’s new generation of young, independent musicians. Incubated in collective houses, studios, and rehearsal spaces, the musical movement captured here takes cues from soul, jazz and club culture, in a place where outside influences are freely re-interpreted and mashed together. This is a celebratory record, energised by a collaborative spirit.
Since the breakout success of Hiatus Kaiyote (with whom many of the record’s groups share members, friendships or studios) in 2012, the music scene in Melbourne reached a maturation point, here represented by different projects, equal in their artistry and creativity. Unlike other cities with storied histories in jazz culture, the sound of Melbourne is free of any jazz customs to follow behind, leaving musicians free to incorporate hip hop, house or R&B. Jazz is the mindset, the output is infinitely diverse.
Engineered & mixed by Nick Herrera (Hiatus Kaiyote, Nai Palm, 30/70), with Silentjay as musical director, Sunny Side Up features tracks from Allysha Joy, Horatio Luna, Dufresne, Phil Stroud and many more - exploring the story behind this flourishing period and shinning light on some of its most talented figures. In a city as isolated from the world as Melbourne, collaboration is second-nature to a hungry scene focused on building their own identity. Vinyl editions are up for grabs, courtesy of the invaluable work of London-based Brownswood Recordings - always contributing to the reach of new and brilliant musicians.
