wheelup: good love
Francisco Espregueira
Danny Wheeler, a West-London multi-talented artist behind the pseudonym WheelUp, unveils his highly anticipated debut full-length, coming out tomorrow via Tru Thoughts. Following a string of successful releases on labels like Co-Op and Future Bounce, that garnered support from all corners of the electronic and jazz world, Good Love is a fantastic first incursion in the LP formats - effortlessly fusing broken beat with hip hop, neo soul, nu-jazz and a host of dancefloor-ready experiments.
As an artist, producer and DJ of dual heritage, Zimbabwean and British, WheelUp grew up in the epicentre of broken beat that is West London, and around the likes of Goya Music, IG Culture, Kaidi Tatham and Afronaut, whom collaboration on the album is essential. On Good Love, he also invites one of Puerto Rico’s most famous salsa musicians, Roberto Roena; drum and bass duo’s Pola & Bryson illusive alter ego, Abacus; and one of the most well-known and loved voices in broken beat, Bembe Segue. The up and coming voices of Brint Story and Tiawa are also present in this record, showcasing WheelUp’s flair for highlighting and nurturing new talent. Broken-house grooves, jazz improvisations, electro-boogie-inspirations, this is WheelUp’s statement, presenting new music and recuperating previous tracks from past EP’s. Good Love is an essential album for the bruk heads in 2021. Available on vinyl.
